The fourth Sam Jones mystery has it all for those who are up to date on this series. For those who aren’t, what the heck are you waiting for? Sam Jones; sexy sculptress/amateur detective is a joy in Mystery. Funny, irreverent and not afraid to be politically incorrect the heroine of Lauren Henderson’s books is a little bit sassy and despite herself a little bit classy. Enough already you’re saying... what about this book?

CHAINED opens with Sam back in England. Our own mobile builder doesn’t know what she wants to do next with her artistic talents so she’s loaned out her sculpting equipment and herself to the production company behind beau Hugo’s new Television mini series. Thinking of dwindling funds and the opportunity of spending time with aforementioned beau Sam looks upon the shoot of the BBC series as a bit of an adventure, tedious though it may be. Tedious and Sam Jones? So the lead actress begins to make rather off the wall statements about animal rights activists and a dead animal ends up in her dressing room. Then Sam is kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity. A very dead body shows up. After a week of captivity Sam is freed battered and bruised but decides she can solve this thing with a bit of help from her own irregulars and the pages turn until you’ve arrived at the end of the book waiting desperately for the next one.

Ms. Henderson has done some wonderful writing in this book. Beyond her usually fine plot development and character assessments in CHAINED she writes some wonderful captivity scenes with Sam. She also subtlety brings Sam to a new place in life and her art career.
