Bernard Cornwell is the author of forty novels, all historical adventure fiction. He is best known for the Richard Sharpe series, featuring a British soldier fighting against Napolean's forces. 15 of these have been made into excellent BBC America films starring Sean Bean. Another of his series is set in late 9th century England. Alfred the Great has rallied forces to stop a Danish (Vikings) invasion of England. Lords of the North is the third in this series that features Uthred, a great warior who helps Alfred unify the lands into a Christian country that will be called England. Like Sharpe, Uthred is an amazing fictional character with great depth. Cornwell has great ability to place the reader into the time period he writes about. Most of the characters in his books really lived, his historical detail is accurate, his books thrilling adventure. I have now read sixten of the forty and I intend to read Cornwell's entire works.
