Bernard Cornwell is simply one of the great fiction authors working today. He is best known for the Richard Sharpe series, a British soldier fighting against Napoleon. He is also the author of several other brilliant historical series, one of which is set during the American Civil War. Nate Starbuck, the son of a leading Northern preacher who is vocal against slavery, becomes a Rebel and fights for the South. Cornwell takes the reader so deep inside the Civil War(his historical accuracy and research are always brilliant) that one believes they are on the battlefield. Great characters with real depth and exceptional plotting are other hallmarks of Cornwell's work. There are currently four books in this ongoing series, I hope there are many more to come.
