A Skeleton in the Closet is the latest offering from M.C. Beaton . Ms. Beaton is one of mysery’s most beloved scribes. With her Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin series she’s found a loyal and deserved following. A Skeleton in the Closet introduces a new pair to readers new and old. Fell Dolphin and Maggie Partlett have seen the baser side of life. Both wait tables for a living. When Fell’s mother dies and he finds he’s inherited a sum of money his first question is why didn’t he ever know it was there. The second and more interesting question is where did the money come from. The fact that the money may be “ill-gotten gains” from a train robbery long ago makes you sit up and take notice. With a cozy eye Beaton takes her reader through an amenable and craftily drawn plot that endears her two protagonists to us and when the book ends leaves us hoping that this isn’t the last heard from the pair but the beginning of another series. Surely Ms. Beaton has time for one more! If you’ve yet to be enchanted by the lady’s prose do start with SKELETON. And then I have a list of the others for you.
