Sean Chercover returns with his second crime novel featuring Chicago PI Ray Dudgeon. His first, Big City, Bad Blood was really excellent and I have looked forward to this book for some time. Dudgeon is hired by a retired Army Intelligence Colonel who's daughter has been killed by a mentally ill co-worker. Ray's investigation will take him into the darkness of the Military Industrial Complex and deep into the intelligence community and put his life and his friends lives in jeopardy.
Chercover is a former PI in real life and his experience gives his books a unique believability. Dudgeon is an excellent lead character, vulnerable yet tough and hard if the need arises. His plotting is first rate and his characters ring true. Chercover reminds me of early Loren Estleman and now I must wait a year for his next book. Fans of noir fiction will love this new series.
