Author James Sallis has long been one of writing's cult stars. He is best
known for his crime novels but he is also a poet, essayist and is known for
his biography of Chester Himes. He has received great praise for his excellent
series featuring New Orleans PI Lew Griffin. What You Have Left
is a trio of novels known as The Turner Trilogy. Turner is an ex-cop turned
convict who becomes a therapist and moves to a small town near Memphis to get
a new start. Like his
earlier crime stories, Sallis's fiction, reads a little like poetry, with minimalist
prose and excellent insight into the human condition. He plots are fine crime
stories that also deal with social and race issues and are fun to read. Again,
this volume has three Turner novels together and this is a great place to start
reading Mr. Sallis.
